The difference between American football and rugby

Author:

I believe many people regard rugby and American football as the same sport, but this is not the case. So why is rugby called American football? The following is a store introduction to the reason why rugby is called American football and the differences between the two. I hope you all like it!

The reason why football is called American football

In fact, Soccer is not a word created by Americans. Although an important reason why Americans cannot use Football to refer to football is that the popularity of Football in the United States is definitely more than Soccer.

The word Soccer is not actually the difference between British English and American English in the general sense:

The first football association established in the world was the English Football Association. Of course, this is just a Chinese name, his English name is The Football Association (The FA). This organization, founded in 1863, was originally established to formulate rules for football. They did not expect that football would develop and become popular so quickly.

At that time, a variant of Football had begun to appear in the UK, which allowed hands to touch the football. The history of rugby is now easy to find. Rugby originated in a British school called Rugby School. When playing football, some students suddenly ran towards the opponent's gate with the ball in their arms. Later, it gradually evolved into rugby. When rugby first appeared, it existed as a special way of playing football. When the FA was established in 1863, some rugby clubs decided to set up separate organizations, which formed the Rugby Football Union. Football Union (RFU).

In order to distinguish the two types of football, the British call the ball managed by the Football Association (The Football Association) Association Football and the Rugby Football Union (Rugby Football Union) Rugby Football.

There is a preference in British culture for abbreviations, which helps them become familiar with new things. So they simplified the word Association Football, took the third, fourth, and fifth letters from the word Association, and called football SOCcer. So the word Soccer was actually invented by the English, but it needs to be stated: Soccer can only be called this sport. The ball used in football matches can be called Football or Soccer Ball, but it cannot be called Soccer.

Later, football became more and more popular in the UK, and people no longer used Soccer to refer to football, but directly used the word Football. Rugby, on the other hand, must be called Rugby, or the term Rugby Union. This is the most direct manifestation of one of the attributes of culture: no need to be precise, just popular.

The word "soccer" has been preserved in the United States, which is partly related to the fact that football is more popular than football in the United States. In other words, in both the United States and the United Kingdom, Football is used to refer to a sport that is more popular in the country. This is understandable.

The difference between American football and rugby

The fundamental difference between the two is the degree of physical collision.

The body collision fouls in rugby are similar to those in football (it is originally a by-product of handball fouls in football).

So soft rugby, a simplified version of rugby, is actually rugby that is popular in primary and secondary schools in many countries around the world.

The other big differences between the two are that the venue rules have a relatively small impact (of course, the standard venue is 160×75 yards, and the American venue is 120×53 1/3 yards), and there are more personnel involved (the standard participant group in the British venue is 15 people, 8 forwards and 7 defenders, 4 more than the American style of 4 defenders and 7 forwards).

Second, the protective gear has less impact (the American style is pure iron-clad meat, and the British style is ordinary padding-no more than basketball ones, and the most common protective gear is called braces).

The third is the game time, which is 80 minutes in British style, divided into two halves. The American style is 4 quarters of 15 minutes each.

The scoring rules are not exactly the same either.

The British offensive tactics lack aggressiveness, unlike the American style of trying every means to push forward. In a rugby match, the ball must be passed to the players behind them. After the players fall to the ground, they must immediately "let go" of the ball and let others grab it, so "stacked" scenes often occur.

In terms of scoring, scoring methods in English rugby are divided into touchdowns and field goals. A touchdown of 5 points. A follow-up shot after a touchdown counts for 2 points. A penalty kick due to a foul is worth 3 points.

The American style scores touchdowns, field goals and safeties. A touchdown is worth 6 points, a follow-up shot is worth 1 point, a field goal is worth 3 points, and forcing the opponent to a dead ball is worth 2 points for safety.
