The History and Origins of Basketball

Author:

Basketball was invented by American James Naismith in 1891. At that time, he taught at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Due to the abundant production of peaches in the local area, children here also love playing the game of throwing balls into peach baskets. This inspired him to draw inspiration from it and incorporate the characteristics of other ball games such as football and hockey, creating basketball games.
Initially, basketball games were relatively simple, with no restrictions on the size of the field or the number of participants. The competition team is divided into two equal teams, standing at both ends of the court. After the referee throws the ball towards the center of the court, both team members immediately rush into the field to grab the ball and strive to throw it into the opponent's basket. Because the peach basket has a bottom, the ball stays in the basket after being thrown, and people must climb a specially designed ladder to retrieve the ball from the basket.
With the continuous improvement of venue facilities, the bottom of the basket has been removed and replaced with iron rings instead of peach baskets. Wooden boards have been used to make rebounds instead of wire blocking nets. The court has added a midline, middle ring, and free throw line, and the game has started with a jump shot from the midfield. At the same time, the number of players on the field is usually changed to 5 per team, starting with positions such as defender, defender, center forward, forward, and left back. In addition, Naismith formulated an incomplete competition rule with 13 clauses, which stipulated that running with the ball, holding people, pushing people, tripping people, hitting people, etc. are not allowed. This greatly increased the fun of basketball games and attracted more people to participate, thus quickly making basketball popular throughout the United States.
In 1892, basketball was first introduced to Mexico from the United States and quickly spread throughout the country. In this way, Mexico became the first country outside of the United States to develop basketball. Afterwards, this sport was introduced to countries such as France, the United Kingdom, China, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Australia, Lebanon, etc., and was carried out, popularized, and developed worldwide.
In 1895, American Bob Galey introduced basketball to China, and in 1896, the Tianjin Christian Education Youth Association held China's first basketball game performance. Afterwards, it was launched in youth associations in cities such as Tianjin and Beijing. At the first National Games of old China in 1910, basketball was first listed as a performance event. In the second National Games of 1914, basketball was listed as an official competition event for men, and in 1924, it was listed as an official competition event for women at the third National Games. Basketball has been an official event of the Asian Games since 1951.
In 1932, the International Amateur Basketball Federation was established, and men's basketball was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as an official Olympic sport. In 1946, professional basketball leagues emerged in the United States and developed into the NBA.
Women's basketball did not develop until the early 20th century. In 1976, women's basketball was listed as an official Olympic event.
